About Us

Della and Steve Gallant are the new owner/operators of The Bird’s Nest Cottages in Vernon Bridge. We were born in PEI but have left in our adult years to live and explore Canada, but the sights and smell of the Ocean called us back HOME, to PEI 8 years ago.

We’ve been living in North Rustico, our hometown for the past 8 years and when the opportunity came to purchase this property we jumped at the chance.

We both worked in the service industry for many years.  Della in the food and beverage industry and Steve in the Courier business these days but has extensive experience in the oil patch working here in Canada and overseas.

We love our Island and to be honest we still have a lot of exploring to do in our own back yard.  We love to golf, fish, garden and get to know people.

History of the property

two men in the store

The first store on the property was owned by Mr. Cummisky then later sold to Andrew Morrissey. Dan Cummings moved to Vernon Bridge and bought the store. He and his wife Peg lived on the third floor of the Ross Home (2 doors down from the property). In 1930 Lawson Jenkins was going to build a new house so Dan bought and moved the large house. He also moved the old warehouse on the shore of the river and used it for stock at the store.

Dan Cummings passed away in his sleep in the large house, and Jim Culbert bought it from the estate. He ran the store from 1990 selling everything in a general store from meats to veggies to grocery items. He also introduced movie rentals and magazine rack.

Blair hall upholstery

Irving Oil provided the tanks underground to sell regular gas at the pumps. In 1992 the pumps were decommissioned and in 1995 the store was closed and became for a short time Jim's Upholstery shop. In 1998 Jim sold Blair Hall where your house was moved from and renovated the place into the Rainbow Lodge. It was here that the first Same Sex Marriage was performed in 2006, Jim moved the lower level of a house under construction down the road and turned it into an Upholstery shop.

In 2012 Jim sold the property to Derick Morgan and Levent Edrogen from Montreal.

In 2022 it was sold to Della and Steve Gallant.
